More than 80 Canberra kindergarten students learned this week that MobileMuster collects old and disused mobile phones for recycling to help the environment by conserving scare resources and reducing greenhouse gases.

MobileMuster’s mascot, Milton, was a big hit as was AMTA’s Policy Manager, Peppi Wilson, who talked to more than 80 Kindergarten childMilton_at_Red_Hill_Primaryren at Red Hill Primary School in Canberra.

“The students were able to correctly identify many of the materials used in a mobile phone and learned about the benefits of recycling those materials, both in terms of waste and pollution prevention and resource recovery,” she said.

“The children learned about mobile phone recycling as part of their current ‘Inquiry’ into waste management and recycling, having already visited the local Resource Management Centre.”

The manager of MobileMuster, Rose Read, who surprisingly appeared at Red Hill Primary School after Milton had farewelled the children, said the program’s schools initiative, the Schools Recycling Challenge, explained to children why and how mobile phones are recycled.

“We explain to the students that more than 90% of the materials in mobile phones can be recovered and used as raw materials for new products. We take the students through the MobileMuster poster which outlines some of the new products that can be made from mobile phones,” she said.

“Next week we are going to announce the winners of the MobileMuster Schools Recycling Challenge for terms one and two, which has attracted more than 500 entrants.”
