Barmah-Millewa Forest: Superb_Parrot_RedGum_CLOSEUP_PICT0068

The Barmah-Millewa Forest is one of Australia’s most unique wetland areas and is home to the iconic River Red Gum and endangered Superb Parrot. The project will be overseen by the Superb Parrot Project Group who will be planting as many as 7,500 trees including the majestic river red gums to create future foraging sites for the Superb Parrot and contribute to the overall health of the Murray River.

Site Description

• The Barmah-Millewa Forest contains representative, rare or unique examples of wetland types within the biogeographical region and supports vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species and threatened ecological communities.
• The forest is home to River Red Gum which are an iconic plant species native to Australia
• The forest regularly supports 20,000 or more waterbirds and is an important source of food for fishes, spawning ground, nursery and/or migration path on which fish stocks, either within the wetland or elsewhere, depend.
• The forest is also recognized is the last known nesting site for the endangered Superb Parrot in Victoria. Clearing and development have severely depleted box woodlands, their foraging habitat.
• The project sites are adjacent to the iconic Barmah Millewa Forest which exists in the Victoria-New South Wales border, north-west of Shepparton (VIC)

The Group

The Superb Parrot Project group which commenced in 1993 contains thirty members which is comprised of local landholders and several dedicated community members.
