The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) is the peak national body representing Australia’s mobile telecommunications industry.

AMTA’s vision is to promote an environmentally, socially and economically responsible and successful mobile telecommunications industry in Australia.

Australia’s mobile telecommunications industry is a high-revenue industry that makes a substantial and growing contribution to the wider telecommunications industry and the Australian economy.

The contribution of the mobile telecommunications sector to the economy is larger than the free-to-air television industry and also larger than the newspaper printing and publishing industry.

From small beginnings in 1987, the mobile telecommunications industry had 19.76 million mobile phone services in operation on June 30, 2006. Mobile services in operation as a proportion of the Australian population is 96 per cent.

Despite its economic importance, AMTA’s focus is wider than the economic bottom line. Mobile phones are having a marked impact on people’s lives and AMTA is committed to providing practical assistance to users through such programs as recycling, lost and stolen and consumer tips.

The Mobile Carriers Forum (MCF) is a division of AMTA. The MCF is a specialised AMTA Forum that deals specifically with social, environmental, policy and regulatory issues related to the deployment and operation of mobile phone networks.

AMTA aims to achieve its vision and represent its members’ interests by:

  • Effective industry representation and leadership
  • Generating consensus on whole-of-industry issues
  • Improving the level of trust between the industry, its key stakeholder and the wider community
  • Promoting an improved understanding of the mobile telephone industry and its contribution to the Australian community
