Partnership with local councils

Local government partnerships, especially in regional and remote communities, have helped MobileMuster maintain an expansive coverage.

The program works with nearly 400 councils around Australia reaching 18 million residents. Councils provide over 1,000 MobileMuster collection sites which include waste transfer stations, community recycling centres and local libraries. Together they recycle tonnes of electronic waste through the program every year and make the program accessible to communities. With currently 96% of the Australian population living within 10km of one of our collection points.

About MobileMuster

MobileMuster is the product stewardship program of the telecommunications industry and is accredited by the Federal Government. It is voluntarily funded by all of the major handset manufacturers and network carriers to provide a free mobile phone recycling program in Australia to the highest environmental standard. The program is committed to raising awareness and educating the community on repair, reuse and recycling.

The program accepts all brands of mobiles, chargers, accessories, wearables and wifi dongles.

Our recycling process

There is a clear need to recycle electronic waste to avoid products from ending up in landfill. In addition, recycling ensures valuable resources that have gone into making our mobile technology are recovered and reused in the manufacturing of new products.

MobileMuster partners with recyclers who are world class in achieving high recovery rates and are committed to innovation in the recycling process. As part of our transparency, we audit our recyclers for compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations, and require the use of best practices.

Getting your collections ready

To assist you in preparing your collections, for transportation, please follow this simple step-by-step guide:

  1. Keep mobile phone batteries in devices where possible. Any loose batteries require their terminals to be sealed (use tape to do this) and then tied together with rubber bands top to tail. Place the batteries in a plastic bag and then into the box/es.
  2. Use an undamaged sturdy box.
  3. Fill the box to the top with product to minimize movement during transportation. Use packing paper, crumpled paper or newspaper to fill the box and prevent movement of the product if necessary.
  4. Seal the box securely to ensure nothing can fall out during transportation.
  5. Once your booking has been confirmed, you will receive labels from MobileMuster. Print these off and attach to each box.
  6. The box/es are now ready to be collected. Our courier partner will arrive within three business days.

It is important that the labels are attached as it is a requirement of federal legislation.  The labels will contain the UN ADG Code and indicate to the driver that there are lithium-ion batteries in the box, which must travel by road and extra care should be taken when transporting.

Note: Swollen, damaged and/or leaking batteries, or non-mobile phone batteries are NOT to be included in the box.

It is important that the packing instructions are adhered to.  Courier drivers may refuse to pick up your box/es if the guidelines have not been followed.

If you have any questions or require additional support, please reach out to us via mobilemuster@amta.org.au or call 1800 249 113.
